!Snow forecast!

Be prepared for weather warnings and for them to change quickly. The Met Office recommends staying up to date with the weather forecast in your area.
Repairs
Contractors may have more difficulty travelling during bad weather but you can still report repairs using the Report a Repair form or calling the office.

Snow build-up
* Where it is safe to do so from the ground, brush excess snow from guttering to prevent it weighing them down.
* Air Source Heat Pump units must be kept clear of heavy snow build-up to ensure airflow isn’t blocked (this also applies to leaf debris and vegetation growth).  If there is heavy snow, you should:
  • Turn off the power or switch system to “emergency heat” mode at the thermostat
  • Remove snow from the top and around the unit using a soft brush.  Do not use hot water, chemicals or sharp objects; never use force or chip away at ice. (Your unit is an electrical appliance and using water can be very dangerous and ruin the system entirely)
  • Try to have a clearance around all sides of your unit of a minimum of 60cm and around 1 meter in the front of the fan
  • Don’t push snow into the unit
  • Do not cover with tarpaulin or any other cover – this will prevent adequate ventilation and trap moisture
  • If your heat pump is frosted up, don't worry. The unit will automatically activate a de-icing cycle.  You may see steam coming from the heat pump and water coming from the bottom of the unit when this is working.  The system will not produce heat until the de-icing cycle is completed.  Your heating should automatically come back on once de-iced.
If you notice the de-icing mode is not working or, after removing the snow there is still an issue with the unit working, please contact CHT immediately and we will arrange for an engineer to attend or to call you.
Power cuts
It's a good idea to have torches and batteries, a mobile phone power pack, flasks and other essential items ready in advance.  If you lose power:
  • Leave a light on, so you know when the power is back on
  • Switch off all electrical appliances that shouldn’t be left unattended, ready for when the power comes back on
  • Check to see if your neighbours are safe and if they have a power cut too. If they have power, your breakers may have tripped
  • If it’s cold, wrap up warm and close internal doors to keep the heat in
  • Portable heaters are a good alternative if heating systems are down
  • Call 105 for information, it’s a free service for people in England, Scotland and Wales

Preventing Burst Pipes
When the temperature is below freezing your pipes are at higher risk of freezing which can lead to burst pipes and flooding.
Ready.Scot have put together some advice on what to do in extreme weather: Protect your home against snow and ice.
