Woodland Crofts

What is a woodland croft?

A woodland croft is a registered croft with sufficient tree cover overall to be considered a woodland under national forestry policy.

A woodland croft can provide access to woodland to manage in support of one's lifestyle, and livelihood.  Such access to woodland is currently rare in Scotland, though more common in Europe.  It can also provide a place to live and a site for a business, as well as access to certain grants specific to crofting.

Woodland crofts are an opportunity for individuals and communities to contribute to their needs from the woodland resource, and the approach to management taken by woodland crofters is expected to deliver increased social, economic and environmental benefits.

Woodland Crofts Partnership in Scotland

The Woodland Crofts Partnership is a partnership between the Community Woodlands Association, Scottish Crofting Federation, Woodland Trust Scotland and the Communities Housing Trust, and supported by The Scottish Government. It has a dedicated website that aims to encourage, support and advise both existing and prospective woodland crofters. It brings together in one place existing information and guidance on woodland crofts, what they are and how they have come about.

Register of Interest

The Woodland Croft Partnership maintains a database of those interested in taking a woodland croft.  The information provided by the database will allow potential woodland crofters to be matched up with those who have woodland crofts available.

If you wish to be included in the database, please download a registration form from the website: www.woodlandcrofts.org
