Aberfeldy Development Trust (“the Trust”) have been successful in securing a £300,000 grant from the Scottish Government’s Regeneration Capital Grant Fund to support the building of new community-owned affordable housing in Aberfeldy. Following on from detailed assessments at the pre-planning application stage, the grant has been awarded to treat the contamination of the site and reduce flood risk. The RCGF programme, developed in partnership with local authorities in Scotland who submit proposals for funding for projects in their areas, supports projects delivering large-scale improvements to disused and derelict sites. The programme focuses on sustainable regeneration projects that engage and involve local communities. Perth and Kinross Council were key to accessing and successfully applying to this fund. The 2025 Community Action Plan for Aberfeldy, Dull and Weem underlined the fundamental importance of bringing more affordable housing to the community. With Highland Perthshire seeing a fall in population in the latest census (including by 5 percentage points in Aberfeldy itself) change and investment is needed. This significant contribution from RCGF will be part of the well over £1 million necessary to construct houses on the former Slaughterhouse site to the west of the town. The Trust have secured over £700,000 in funding for this development in Aberfeldy to date and will continue to seek additional funding from the Scottish Government Rural and Islands Housing Fund, an existing Trust funder along with the Scottish Land Fund. Gill Steele, Chair of the Trust, said: “We are very grateful to the Regeneration Capital Grant Fund for supporting this project. With the land now in the hands of the community and the planning process underway the vision of new affordable housing for the community is getting closer. With the continued support of Perth and Kinross Council (PKC) and our partners in the Communities Housing Trust (CHT) we are working as hard as we can to fund and deliver these crucial homes for our community as quickly as possible.” John Forbes, Communities Coordinator at CHT, said: “The Communities Housing Trust are delighted to have supported the Aberfeldy Development Trust with this exciting project from the outset. Results from the Housing Need Survey we undertook and responses to the Community Action Plan both demonstrated a pressing requirement for affordable homes in the town. Uniquely, this development will transform a derelict brown field into an exciting small housing development of energy efficient affordable homes helping to address the concerns expressed by the community at large.” If anyone has any questions about the project they can email [email protected] |
